The Springboks have officially ended their 2024 international season on an all-time high, and while players often get recognition for their on-field performances, those behind the scenes usually play a vital role as well.

For Springbok physiotherapist Rene Naylor, the end-of-year November tour appeared to be a bittersweet moment. While there were tears of joy and jubilation as the team finished their year undefeated in Europe, the medical professional officially participated in her final Springbok match.

In a series of posts in the build-up to the team’s final game against Wales, Rene shared multiple posts in which she gracefully savoured every moment of being involved with the national team on their tour.

Following their victory against England, she wrote: “It’s never easy at Twickenham. So many beautiful memories made.”

A week later she revealed she would partake in her last test match. Taking to Instagram she shared a video of herself and her son as they shared her final experience with the team. However, before this could happen the Springbok first lady was stopped by security who refused to allow her son to get onto the pitch.

“It was a mission to get to Cullin on the pitch post-match. We were both in tears, being my last Springbok test match, but the security would not budge. The legendary Jesse Kriel came to our rescue!”

Reflecting on her journey, she shared that this journey has been filled with kindness.

“The kindness shown to me on my journey. Sometimes it comes from unexpected people and places. It’s the kindness that I will carry forward with me.

“Thank you to one of the greatest leaders in South Africa, Siya Kolisi and the legendary leader of medicine of Welsh Rugby, Prav Mathema. My last Springbok test match.”

According to entertainment publication, The South African, Rene first joined the Springboks in 2008 and has gone on to earn herself 130 caps with the national team. News24 reported that she later retired but resumed her role when current coach Rassie Erasmus came knocking. Since then, she has experienced several highs including winning two Rugby World Cups and a British and Irish Lions series.
