The late gospel giant Solomon Mojafela Molokoane, best known as Solly Moholo, has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) for his profound impact on the music industry.
His daughter accepted the award on his behalf.
“This award is not just a trophy, but a celebration of my father’s life, his dedication, sacrifices and fearless voice. His music carried deep truths and cultural meaning, and this recognition shows that the nation values the impact he made and keeps his music alive as a musician, storyteller and activist.
“My father has a heart of gold and is a grateful man who appreciated even the smallest gestures. The flowers also belong to my mother, who stood by him through poverty, health struggles and happiness because he always thanked everyone he met,” she said.
Solly was known for his unique music style of blending Pretoria slang, motivational words and spirituality, as well as his signature moves.
The Moruti Nthapelele singer passed away in October 2024, at the age of 65 after suffering a stroke and multiple organ failures. He had a career spanning over two decades, and had recorded more than 15 albums.
Solly rose to fame in the 2000s with his album titled Ba Mmitsa Tsotsi, and became a force in the South African gospel scene.
When he fell ill leading to his hospitalisation, he had been on his album tour in Botswana. His family pleaded for donations before he died in hospital.
