Sol Phenduka Voices Doubt Over Nathi Mthethwa’s Cause of Death

When news broke that South Africa’s Ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, had died after reportedly falling from a Paris hotel, the country watched in silence. Then came the voices: opinion, suspicion, and hope for clarity. Among them was radio host and podcaster Sol Phenduka, who took to social media to say, plainly, that he does not believe the official suicide narrative.

A sudden death, many questions

Mthethwa, aged 58, was discovered near the base of the Hyatt Regency in Paris. Authorities believe he fell from the hotel’s 22nd floor. While some reports frame it as a suicide, French investigators have not ruled out any possibility. Also drawing attention: there were reportedly no signs of struggle, no drugs or alcohol detected, and a pair of scissors was found near the scene.
Meanwhile, back home, the nation waits for answers. His family has publicly rejected the suicide claim, insisting instead that something darker may be at play.

“I don’t buy the suicide claims”

On 2 October 2025, Sol Phenduka, recently dismissed from Kaya 959, posted his doubts. He aligned his stance with others, such as writer Ntsiki Mazwai, saying he believes there’s more to the story. His phrase was simple but pointed: “I don’t buy the suicide claims.”

His comment triggered a wave of reactions. Some cautioned against conspiracy thinking, warning that paths of speculation can be messy. Others raised counter-questions: how did someone fall from a sealed hotel window? Why was the ambassador alone? What messages or pressures may have preceded his death?

Social media reacts: speculation, anger, concern

Netizens poured into the comment section. One user warned society against always reaching for conspiracy theories. Another claimed knowledge about hotel windows being sealed in high-rises, suggesting Mthethwa could not have jumped freely. Others linked the timing of his death with his involvement with the Madlanga Commission, raising suspicions of political pressure.

Across X, Facebook, and Instagram, divisions formed. Some backed Phenduka’s bold stance; others urged patience and reliance on the official investigation. Many pleaded for the family’s peace and clarity above speculation.

More than an opinion: what’s at stake

This is not just a celebrity’s comment. The position Phenduka took highlights a broader issue: public trust in institutions, especially in politically charged times. Mthethwa’s name carried weight; he had served as police minister, sports and arts minister, and finally as ambassador to France. His career was not uncontroversial, and now, his end is shrouded in uncertainty.

South Africans have seen how information can be weaponised, how narratives can shift, and how questions are sometimes louder than answers. Phenduka’s stance tapped into that tension. For many, it’s a call to demand more than a simple explanation.

Patience, transparency, truth

There is no easy path forward. Public pressure may force quicker action, but it may also muddy the waters. What South Africa needs now is a careful, full, transparent investigation. No rush to verdicts. No sensationalising grief.

Sol Phenduka’s voice is one in a chorus demanding clarity. Whether the cause of death is confirmed as suicide or something else, one hope persists: the truth must come out, not just for public record but for the peace of a family and a nation watching.
