Hungani Ndlovu celebrates Skeem Saam’s record-breaking 4.5 million viewers

South African television is buzzing as Skeem Saam hits a major milestone, drawing 4.5 million viewers, a record that cements the soapie as the country’s most-watched drama. For fans and cast alike, this is more than numbers; it’s proof of how much the show resonates with viewers across the nation.

Actor Hungani Ndlovu, who took over the role of Tbose (Thabo Maputla) in July 2023, took to social media to celebrate, giving a heartfelt shout-out to the cast and crew who make the magic happen behind the cameras.

“I’m blessed and highly favoured 🙏🏾🎭 What a joy it is to work with people who genuinely love what they do and still give their best, even when the days are long and the circumstances are tough,” Ndlovu posted.

Behind the scenes heroes

Ndlovu didn’t just celebrate the actors, he honoured the often unsung heroes of the production team. From the drivers arriving before sunrise to the catering staff, cleaners, makeup, wardrobe, camera and sound teams, and script coordinators, every department plays a part in building the world of Skeem Saam before an actor even steps on set.

“Every department builds the world before we ever step into frame.✨”

His message resonated with fellow industry professionals online, sparking a wave of appreciation for behind-the-scenes teams who often go unnoticed.

Gratitude to co-stars and fans

Taking a moment to thank his fellow actors, Ndlovu reflected on the trust, generosity, and collaboration that goes into telling the stories that millions tune in for.

“What a privilege to tell stories with you, not just alongside you. Over 4.5 million people this past week… I for one, don’t take that lightly. Thank you to the audience for welcoming these stories into your homes.”

Fans flooded social media with excitement, sharing clips, memes, and heartfelt messages, proving the show’s emotional impact stretches far beyond the screen.

Hope for a regulated industry

Amid the celebrations, Ndlovu also touched on a long-standing issue in South Africa’s entertainment sector: the need for better regulation to protect actors and production staff.

“What a privilege it is to be an actor in South Africa. And what a wonderful privilege it will be to be an actor in a regulated industry in South Africa.”

His words highlight a growing conversation within the industry about workers’ rights, fair compensation, and professional standards, suggesting that even amidst record ratings, there’s more progress to be made behind the spotlight.

A milestone to remember

For Skeem Saam, 4.5 million viewers isn’t just a number—it’s validation. It proves the show continues to reflect South African life, culture, and struggles in a way that resonates deeply with audiences. For Hungani Ndlovu, it’s a reminder of why he chose to step into Tbose’s shoes: to tell stories that matter, with people who care, and for millions of viewers who feel like family.
