Xolani Maphanga, a presenter on Moja Love’s Sizok’thola, and his bodyguard Bongani Mkhabela, were arrested earlier this year and released on bail, pending further investigations.
They have been charged with three counts of attempted murder and trespassing after allegedly assaulting three individuals while filming a drug-busting for their show in March.
The incident in question allegedly occurred during a segment of the show where Xolani and his crew visited a residence in Soshanguve believed to be making drugs and distributing drugs. The family subsequently reported the assault, prompting an investigation by local authorities.
According to City Press, before the arrest warrant was issued, senior police officers from the Soshanguve Police Station met with Moja Love’s management, where the case was discussed. It is allegedly during that meeting that the police were shown footage of the crew’s visit.
Moja LOVE stated to The Citizen that Xolani maintains his innocence, asserting it was a case of mistaken identity and denying any involvement in the alleged assault during filming.
The matter has been postponed by the Soshanguve Magistrates Court to 17 July 2024, for further investigations, and the bail was extended with the same conditions.
Additionally, it appears that controversies involving the presenters of ‘Sizokthola’ are not isolated incidents. Former presenter Xolani Khumalo is currently on trial for the murder of Robert Varrie, who died during a recording of the anti-drug show and additional charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and malicious property damage.
