14 years ago, for the first time in Africa, South Africa hosted the biggest footballing event in the world, the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
In the opening match of this historic tournament, South Africa played against Mexico, and in the 53rd minute, Kaizer Chiefs midfielder and legend Siphiwe Tshabalala sent the crowd into a roar as he scored an electrifying goal. Although he had already achieved many accolades to be proud of, this goal etched his name in the international book of soccer legends.
He has rightfully celebrated the anniversary of the goal since then.
One of the commentators who covered this game at the time was British legend Peter Drury, who delivered one of the most emotional and tear-jerking commentary when Siphiwe scored.
Siphiwe Tshabalala recently took to his social media to share with his followers that he and Peter have finally crossed paths. The two met in Berlin, Germany, after the 2024 UEFA European Championship where Spain lost 2-1 to England.
“14 years later we finally meet. Ladies and gentleman present to you the great Peter Drury,” the legend captioned on an Instagram post.

The comments section was filled with many sharing their fond memories of the World Cup, specifically the monumental goal. Many reflected on how emotionally and memorably Peter’s commentary made everything.
That day will always be memorable for everyone who experienced it. I was at the public viewing center in downtown Jozi, surrounded by a diverse crowd. The memory is so vivid, it feels like it happened just yesterday. I could practically recount every moment of that day.
