Simmi Areff on ‘pitiful radio salaries’ by revealing his earnings at 947

With the recent revelations that certain radio stations are exploiting the talents of some of their workers by paying them less than what their value is, another former radio worker has shared his experience being in the industry.

A few days ago, the public found themselves shocked when former Gagasi FM radio presenter Penny Ntuli revealed the reason why she quit her job at the radio station.

In a social media post, she revealed that the station had reshuffled and started renewing the contracts of their employees, but while she was allowed to return she was, however, offered R2800 for her monthly services – similar to what she received for the past two years at the station.

In a post, she added: “The salary of R2800 per month on my offer letter or contract is not something I can sustain my life with.” This resulted in her declining the contract.

Touching on a similar incident, renowned podcaster Simmi Areff shared his experience in the industry, highlighting that he went through something similar while working as a producer on the breakfast show at 947 radio station.

In a tweet on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:

“Radio salaries are pitiful. I produced breakfast radio for R9000 a month at 947 for two years.”

Later, he shared a follow-up tweet highlighting that he was unable to make use of his leave days or it would affect his salary.

Reacting to Simmi’s post, many users shared their views with some adding that 9K for 2-3 hours sounded completely fair.

However, he later clarified that the hours he worked was beyond just the three hours on air.

I got in at 5am and left at 2pm. Just cause you hear 3 hours of radio doesn’t mean that those are the working hours. https://t.co/ajkfjjMn4g

Meanwhile, another user with the handle @Jadenetager said that she was doing traffic updates at two stations but earned much less than him while working seven-hour shifts.

I was a traffic presenter doing updates and also compiling the bulletins for the drive shows on 702 and 947 and got paid less than this. I was working 7 hour shifts. I left when I was offered 200% more money by another station.
