The act of breathing has been a part of human existence since the beginning of time. From the moment we enter this world, there is not much effort that goes into adopting this phenomenon as a way of surviving – in fact, over the years it has been such a big part of our daily lives that we never really notice when are breathe.

It is for this very reason that most people might find themselves shocked at the revelation that they might be breathing wrong!

To better understand the act of breathing and its functions the medical information hub, Cleveland Clinic explains that the respiratory system plays the biggest role in breathing.

“Your respiratory system is made up of your lungs, airways (trachea, bronchi and bronchioles), diaphragm, voicebox, throat, nose and mouth. Its main function is to breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide.”

The above-mentioned source further notes that this is essential in protecting you from harmful particles and germs, allowing you to smell and speak.

However medical information hub Vivos explains that many have fallen into the trap of adopting an improper method of breathing known as paradoxical breathing.

This occurs when “the abdomen draws in during inhalation and out on exhalation.” This is known to serious health complications.

These include:

  • Elevated heart rate
  • Dizziness
  • Pain or weakness in the chest
  • Laboured breathing and many more…

Medium explains that this is often a technique encouraged by yoga instructors and has no real benefits to it.

Meanwhile, the health and wellness hub, Healthline explains that the most effective way of breathing is when it is steady and controlled.

This involves being extra attentive to the breaths you take. According to Healthline, a proper breathing technique should cause your abdomen to expand with inhaled breaths and later contract with exhalation. If correctly done this should make you feel relaxed and comfortable. This is also known as Diaphragmatic breathing.

The most effective way of achieving this as highlighted by the American Lung Association is by Using your nose, and your belly, practising proper breathing, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
