No DNA, just RSA! There is no better phrase to encapsulate Mzansi’s pride, as one of our own countrymen, Sibusiso Kubheka recently made history as the first athlete to complete a 100km marathon in under 6 hours.

After stopping the clock at exactly 05:59:20 at the most recent Adidas ‘Chasing 100’ project that took place in Italy, Sibusiso Kubheka has etched his name in the globe’s history books, as he became the first athlete to record a sub-6 hour time in a 100km race.

Equipped with cutting-edge Adidas technology, including the Adizero Evo Prime X shoes, the South African runner came out on top against some elite runners, including the likes of USA’s Charlie Lawrence and Lithuania’s Aleksandr Sorokin. His steady pace of 3:57 minutes per kilometer, coupled with some much-needed grit and determination, the 27-year-old runner set himself up nicely for success.

Despite this incredible performance, Sibusiso’s momentous achievement does not qualify for an official world record, and this is due to the use of non-standard race equipment and conditions.

This impressive achievement by South Africa has reignited conversations regarding the future of ultrarunning, as well as the possible integration of innovative technology in the sport of athletics. Furthermore, it has sparked talks about how far the advancements can go when it comes to human endurance.

South Africans, including Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie have taken to social media to congratulate Sibusiso for his impressive achievement. He has been hailed as a hero for flying Mzansi’s flag high, and representing the rainbow nation with pride and joy.

To put that into perspective, that’s like running ten consecutive 10km races in 35:56 each. pic.twitter.com/2hTPjaf4Js
