Get Ready for Ogre-tober: Shrek Rave Is Coming to South Africa

by Zaghrah Anthony

South Africa Prepares for an Ogre-tober Extravaganza

This October, South African partygoers are in for a treat that’s equal parts nostalgia and high-energy fun. Shrek Rave, the beloved movie-inspired electronic dance party, is officially landing in Mzansi. Fans of the green ogre and his fairytale friends can expect a weekend of glow-in-the-dark fun, campy cosplay, and non-stop sing-alongs.

The concept is simple but irresistible: DJs spin remixes of the iconic soundtracks from the original Shrek films, with tracks like “All Star” and “I’m a Believer” transformed into pulsing EDM anthems. The result is a mash-up of childhood memories and rave culture—a combo that has already taken the US and UK by storm.

When and Where to Go

Johannesburg will host the first South African edition at Sognage in Strydom Park on Friday, 10 October. The celebration then moves to Cape Town’s District nightclub in District Six on Friday, 17 October.

Attendees must be 18 or older, and organisers encourage dressing up in green or as favourite characters from the franchise. Whether you come as Shrek, Donkey, Princess Fiona, or the Fairy Godmother, creativity is the name of the game.

Why South Africa?

Louis Williamson, event co-ordinator, explained the decision to bring the event to local shores in an interview with Time Out:

“We’ve heard about the thriving rave culture and energy in South Africa, so it was a no-brainer to bring it here. The first Shrek Rave we did in London took off instantly and became a worldwide phenomenon. It’s a fantastic movie with a fantastic soundtrack, and when we paired it with rave culture, it just worked.”

Beyond the Music

Shrek Rave isn’t just about dancing. The production promises live performances, themed games, prize giveaways, and immersive visuals that transport attendees straight into the swampy world of Shrek. Williamson highlighted that the production value would be unlike anything South African ravers have experienced before.

Tickets Are Selling Fast

Tickets are available via Quicket and are moving quickly. Considering the growing excitement online, there’s every chance the Shrek Rave could return for more stops across the country, making the phenomenon truly “Shrek”-tacular.

A Social Media Buzz

Already, fans have flooded social media with anticipation. Memes of Shrek in glow sticks, cosplay inspiration, and even dance challenge clips are trending under hashtags like #ShrekRaveSA and #OgreTober. South Africans seem ready to embrace the chaos, the music, and the nostalgic hilarity of this one-of-a-kind event.

Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the green ogre or simply looking for a wild night out, Shrek Rave South Africa promises to be a legendary mix of childhood memories, EDM energy, and full-on swamp-themed fun. Grab your green attire and get ready, Ogre-tober is about to take over Mzansi.
