Shoki Mmola reflects on difficult marriage to co-star

In a recent interview on the King David podcast, former Skeem Saam actress Shoki Mmola courageously shared the details of her troubled marriage with a fellow actor Sello Sebotsane. During the podcast, Shoki discussed the red flags and warning signs that were evident long before the abuse began.

Shoki revealed that her marriage was marked by long periods of silence and troubling behaviour from her husband. One distressing incident involved him attacking her, choking her and punching her. Despite the violence, she felt numb and emotionally detached.

“I was working and he asked to speak to me. I think he had been drinking, and when I said not now maybe tomorrow and I was saying that in a fighting mode, he broke the glass and said we would speak now. As big as he was, he sat on my lap, choked, and punched me. That night, I felt nothing; it was as if he was not beating me up enough. When he was beating me up, I told him to hit me harder.”

Her children saw the violence and tried to help. In a moment of danger, she managed to lock herself in a room and called her nanny to report the abuse. The police arrived quickly, thanks to her previous reports about violence and vandalism she had reported to the police.

She also mentioned that she would often apologise for things she didn’t understand, just to keep the peace.
