Shaka iLembe’s risqué wardrobe sparks reaction from SA actors

by Silindokuhle Booi

In a surprising move, Mzansi Magic took to Instagram to share a fascinating behind-the-scenes fact about their award-winning drama series, Shaka iLembe.

The channel revealed that a staggering 6000 G-strings were crafted during the making of the show, leaving fans and actors alike in awe. The post quickly became a talking point, with cast members Nomzamo Mbatha, Sive Mabuya, Wanda Zuma, and others jokingly warning the channel’s social media manager to behave.

This revelation comes as no surprise, given the show’s attention to detail and commitment to authenticity. The costume designer, Sheli Masondo, has been praised for her incredible work on the series. In fact, Sheli won a prestigious Septimus Award in Amsterdam for Best Costume Design for Shaka iLembe in 2024.

According to Sheli, her inspiration for the costumes came from nature – she would walk in empty fields, observing the birds, trees, and leaves to get a sense of the textures and patterns that would bring the show’s characters to life.

Sheli’s approach to costume design was deeply rooted in authenticity and cultural accuracy. As she shared with True Love Magazine, “It was more than design. It was like stepping into my ancestors’ shoes, and I was blown away by how creative they were using whatever surrounded them.

There were no lace ribbons, fabric, sequins, and beads; they used the natural things around them.” This approach is reflected in the show’s costumes, which have been praised for their historical accuracy and attention to detail.

Given the show’s historical context, the costume designer’s decision to incorporate nudity was a deliberate choice to stay true to the story. As Sheli explained, “There was no way of being true to history, yet we cover.” The team’s focus on authenticity and cultural accuracy has earned the show a loyal following, and this latest revelation only adds to its allure.

The Shaka iLembe team’s creativity, attention to detail, and commitment to authenticity have made the show a standout in the world of television. With its engaging storyline, memorable characters, and stunning costumes, it’s no wonder the series has captured the hearts of audiences across the country.”
