Scottish man behind viral dress that broke the internet pleads guilty to strangling wife

Nearly a decade ago Keir Johnson and his wife Grace were thrust into the spotlight for “the dress that broke the internet.”

Grace’s mother’s dress became a viral online sensation in 2015 when she was sent a photo of the now-infamous dress, and asked her daughter whether she should wear it to their wedding, resulting in the couple arguing over which colour it was.

The dress went viral when a wedding guest Caitlin McNeill shared the photo on Tumblr, appealing for help to solve the colour dilemma, the Guardian reported.

Now Keir, 38, has made headlines again, albeit for a more sinister reason.

Last week he pleaded guilty to strangling Grace at their home in Scotland’s Isle of Colonsay in 2022.

During an appearance at the high court in Glasgow, the court heard how Keir threatened Grace at their remote Scottish home, telling her, “Someone is going to die.”

According to the prosecution, Grace feared for her life after going against Keir’s demands not to attend a job interview on the mainland.

A few days later, Keir allegedly sent several messages to his wife, including one that read: “You should support me but you do not.”

After Grace returned home, Keir told her he would be leaving her which led to an argument. He then grabbed her and threw her to the ground while allegedly brandishing a knife.

“You repeatedly strangled her, injured her and put her life in danger in what must have been absolutely terrifying circumstances for her,” the BBC cited Judge Lady Drummond as saying.

Keir was initially charged with attempted murder. He will be sentenced on June 6.
