The deadly accident happened on Monday morning at around 7 am in Vanderbijlpark, where a minibus taxi collided with a truck. The initial death toll stood at 11, but later rose to 13. The driver survived the crash.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the minibus driver attempted to overtake a vehicle in front of him and did not notice an oncoming truck, resulting in a head-on collision. Police have opened 13 cases of culpable homicide.

Meanwhile, Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi said the taxi driver involved in Monday’s tragic scholar transport crash in Vanderbijlpark was driving with an expired public driver’s permit.

According to BBC, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called Monday’s crash “distressing”.

“Our children are the nation’s most precious assets and we must do all we can – from observing the rules of the road to the quality of service providers appointed to transport scholars – to protect learners,” Ramaphosa added.
