Actress and star of the iconic film Sarafina! Leleti Khumalo announced that the film was set to be released in theatres this Women’s Month.

The film – produced by Anant Singh and also starring EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg and the late Miriam Makeba, will feature new scenes as well as a song by Miriam and Lelethi.

Back in May, the film was selected for the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival for the Official Selection 2023 Cannes Classics.

Lelethi shared the latest news on her social media platform, writing, “The classic film, SARAFINA! will be released at cinemas in South Africa on 11 August 2023 paying homage to the remarkable women who shaped the struggle. A captivating new poster which depicts the powerful female characters in the film has been designed especially for this release.

“Among these characters are Sarafina’s mother Angelina who works as a domestic helper played by the legendary Miriam Makeba; Mary Masembuko, the outspoken and inspiring teacher played by Academy Award®️ winner Whoopi Goldberg and Sarafina, the fearless young girl and student activist, played by Leleti Khumalo.”

Lelethi then added, “These characters vividly portray the vital role women played as the backbone of the struggle. This timely release during Women’s Month serves as a poignant tribute to the indomitable spirit of these brave women. A compelling new trailer has also been created to promote the film.”
