SA jokingly blames DSTV technical glitch for Bafana defeat

Wednesday evening’s AFCON sem-final match between South Africa and Nigeria has certainly lived up to the hype.

The two football-proud nations both came out guns blazing, resulting in the game becoming a real arm wrestle with scores locked at 1-1 each going all the way to the 90th minute.

This meant that the only thing that could determine who goes on into the final, was penalties. While many anticipated seeing the same heroics from Bafana captain Ronwen Williams as in the quarter-final, sadly a technical glitch by the broadcaster DSTV resulted in millions of South Africans missing out on seeing how the penalties played out.

“We apologise for the break in transmission. Our technicians are working to resolve the issue,” read the error message.

To their disappointment, when the issue was sorted, Bafana had already lost the game, losing 4-2 on penalties.

Following the result, mzansi soccer lovers went to X (formerly Twitter) and jokingly blamed the broadcaster for being the reason to why the national team lost.

One user wrote:

“DSTV stopped working during AFCON penalty shootouts!!? Bafana Bafana they have failed you.”

Another added: “Looks hacked lol l kept refreshing. They wasted our adrenaline rush.”

Meanwhile as third user wrote: “We come back to find out SA has missed a penalty mxa what kind of witchcraft is this?”

Jokingly there were also some who blamed the loss on social media personality and sangoma Gogo Maweni, accusing her “muhti” of not being effective enough.

“That muthi from Gogo Maweni today never worked,” was what another user wrote.

While the loss has ended Bafana’s hopes of winning the competition, they will now compete in the third-place playoffs against the DRC.
