R275k fine for Chiefs and Pirates after fans misbehaviour

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates were fined due to fan misconduct during recent matches.

Chiefs were fined R150,000 for a missile-throwing incident at FNB Stadium during the Soweto Derby recently. This wasn’t their first offense, as they had a previous suspended fine of R100,000, which was triggered due to the repeat offense.

Orlando Pirates, on the other hand, were fined R125,000 for a similar incident during their match against Mamelodi Sundowns. They were initially fined R100,000, with R25,000 suspended, but a previously suspended fine of R50,000 was triggered, bringing the total to R125,000.

Both teams pleaded guilty to the charges and were ordered to publish the sanctions on their official websites within seven days to deter future misconduct from their supporters.

You might be wondering why teams get fined for missile-throwing. Well, according to PSL, it is considered a serious offence that poses a threat to player and spectator safety. In South Africa, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) takes a strong stance against such behaviour, and teams can face significant fines when their fans engage in missile-throwing or other forms of misconduct.

The PSL’s disciplinary committee has the authority to impose fines. However, the fines are not always the case, sometimes the teams may also face other penalties, such as having points deducted or being forced to play matches behind closed doors.

We wonder if this might be the reason for the postponement of the match between Royal AM and Kazier Chiefs or whether it is due to the ongoing SARS saga with Royal AM.
