Prince of Maskandi: Sixolile Sotashe’s journey to stardom

by Silindokuhle Booi

Sixolile Sotashe, affectionately known as Prince, is a rising DJ who has carved out his space in the music world by playing the maskandi genre.

While maskandi is deeply rooted in Zulu culture, Prince’s connection to the genre is uniquely tied to his past in the taxi industry. In a candid conversation with BONA, Prince revealed that he initially hated maskandi music but, over time, grew to understand its deeper meaning.

“I don’t want to lie, I did not expect this genre to be like this. I took a leap of faith and everything worked out,” he shared.

Prince views his artistry as a vital part of keeping maskandi relevant. He believes every artist has their unique strength, and for him, it’s how he plays the music. “The genre is still in its early days—we are yet to see it grow and become better,” he said, reflecting on the evolution of maskandi in modern times.

As a DJ on the rise, Prince has big dreams. “I am hoping to become more than a DJ. I started with this uncertain but hoping it would work out—which it did.” While staying tight-lipped about the details, Prince revealed that he and his team are currently working on two exciting projects, pouring their energy into bringing them to life.

When it comes to his musical influences, Prince’s go-to artists are Menzi, Khuzani, and his newest favourite, Shenge. He credits them for inspiring his craft and keeping his passion for maskandi alive.

Navigating fame comes with its challenges, but Prince has found the journey smooth, filled with love and appreciation from his fans. “I think everything that happened, happened so that I am who I am today,” he reflected. “They were to shape me, and I hope my decision-making can help put me on the right path.”

Outside of music, Prince is full of surprises. He’s a skilled cook, a talent he learned from his grandmother, and soccer is the love of his life. In fact, he once thought he’d become a soccer star and still makes time for the sport despite his busy schedule.

To aspiring DJs, Prince offers some wise words: “Consistency. Decision-making. If you doubt it, then it’s not it. Work hard and work smart.” He also emphasises the importance of staying grounded and not letting pressure consume you.

Prince is not just showcasing maskandi music—he’s redefining it. With his passion, talent, and vision, there’s no doubt that this genre’s future is in safe hands.
