Deejay and record producer Kabelo Motsamai, better known as Prince Kaybee, opened up about what it was like not receiving words of affection from a parent.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Fetch Your Life artist shared, “This one time I was in a makeup room with a peer, we were both getting ready to get on set for a TV show. Her mom called her, at the end of the conversation the mom simply said ,’I love you,’ and my peer said it back. I don’t know how that feels and I was jealous.”

He added, “I’m also aware that there’s more of us like this, the issue is that we now have our own kids and we can’t recall a simple ‘I love you’ from our own parents. DON’T BE LIKE THEM.”

Prince Kaybee received quite a few posts under his comments section.

One person wrote, “Ey, it’s unsual in the black community. Even as friends we do not exchange such words we see love by actions. May we be not like our parents.”

Another person commented, “My mother has also never said it to us but we’ve always known she does. She has become mellow to grandkids but she still struggles to say it back to them, especially when we’re around, I’ve overheard her say I love you too when she thought I wasn’t around.”

While another person stated, “Nna when growing up there was no need for my parents to say I LOVE YOU, their actions were more important than words. They showed me REAL LOVE, and that’s what I’m doing to my kids.”
