South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and the African National Congress (ANC) have come under fire for comments on migration made at the Liberation Movements Summit on July 27, 2025, in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni.
President Ramaphosa’s remarks have sparked controversy, with many criticising his stance on the issue. During his address which included delegates from various liberation movements across Africa, he emphasised the need to reject xenophobia in all its forms.
He stated that migration should not be seen as a threat, but rather as a consequence of a number of factors.
“It is a consequence of underdevelopment, war, and global inequality, not a moral failing of those who migrate in search of hope,” he said.
The President called for people-centered regional migration policies that affirm dignity, rights, and solidarity. He also emphasised that Africa’s freedom struggles were international and that the continent’s liberation was achieved through the efforts of people globally.
His comments were made in the presence of several African leaders, including Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Mozambican President Daniel Chapo, and representatives from Namibia, Angola, and Tanzania.
While President Ramaphosa’s intention was to promote a more inclusive and compassionate approach to migration, his comments have been met with criticism from some South Africans.
Many have expressed concerns about the impact of migration on the country’s resources and economy. Others have argued that Ramaphosa’s stance is out of touch with the reality on the ground.
The controversy surrounding President Ramaphosa’s comments highlights the complexities of migration in South Africa. As the country grapples with high levels of unemployment, poverty, and inequality, the issue of migration remains a contentious one.
Taking to the internet streets, some netizens expressed their opinions:
One said, “Nonsense. The ANC must be shown the door come 2026 and 2029.”
Another one wrote: “What nonsense is this? We have no problem with migration. We have a problem with illegal undocumented foreign nationals doing as they please.”
“It’s nice to talk rubbish when your family doesn’t know how to queue for medication at 4 am,” said one.
