Music producer and DJ Oscar Mdlongwa, known to many as the legendary Oskido, has decided to share the journey of his iconic music label Kalawa Jazmee in the form of a documentary.

Founded by Oskido, Christos, Bruce Sebitlo, Don Laka, Eugene Mthethwa, Jairus ‘Jararumba’ Nkwe, Mandla ‘Spikiri’ Mofokeng, Mojalefa ‘Mjokes’ Matsane, and Zynne ‘Mahoota’ Sibika 29 years ago, Oskido argues that the label not only contributed to the local music industry’s growth but has been a major force in popularising kwaito music, reports Sowetan Live.

The publication states that the label’s story will be a docu-series aired on Mzansi Magic, taking viewers behind the scenes of the nation’s music and transforming the perceptions people have of the genre.

Says Oskido to Sowetan Live, “It [fills] us with immense pride that we have been part of popular culture, producing stars and bringing joy to people’s lives. We have also shown that it is possible to build something significant in this industry.”

He continued, “Remember when you think of Kalawa Jazmee, you have to be thinking about the movement of which we have been an integral part. That movement has empowered so many artists and from that perspective, you can see that people like Phori [DJ Maphorisa], [DJ] Zinhle to name a few, are taking the baton to a higher level.

“Our purpose is not only about Kalawa Jazmee, but also about the culture in general. We are currently restructuring and will be making announcements in due course,” concluded Oksido.
