Following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s national address on the allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi who accused Senzo Mchunu and several other high-profile politicians of corruption, music producer Oscar Mbo has expressed frustration with our country’s leadership.
On Sunday, the President held a televised ‘family meeting’ where he addressed the nation on the current dilemma.
In his address, he revealed that Minister Mchunu would be placed on leave of absence with immediate effect and that a judicial commission of inquiry would be launched to investigate whether there was any truth to the allegations.
“The commission will investigate the role of current or former senior officials in certain institutions who may have aided or abetted the alleged criminal activity, failed to act on credible intelligence or internal warnings, or benefited financially or politically from a syndicate’s operations.”
Meanwhile, he has since announced the appointment of law Professor Firoz Cachalia as Police Minister.
The President’s decision to place Mchunu on leave has since been met with widespread criticism, and some political parties such as the MK Party have criticised Ramaphosa for not firing Mchunu with immediate effect.
A number of South Africans also shared their dissatisfaction with the decision, including Oscar Mbo.
The music producer and DJ recently took to social media expressing his frustration, writing, “Remember such instances when it’s time to vote”.
This has since led to fans urge him not to get involved in politics for fear of what it may do to his career, but the musician has refused to remain silent.
“We need to speak on these things and spread awareness of our lack of leadership in this country,” he responded.
“If the people at the top, who are powerful, can’t be protected, what happens to a normal citizen? What’s the future of our kids looking like if the future is bleak as it is?”
