Everyone is aware that the Olympics are a sports tournament that athletes dedicate a large portion of their lives and time to prepare for. They are not only a platform to support one’s favourite athletes, but an opportunity to display some patriotism as many find themselves watching sports they have never heard of to witness their countrymen compete.
Although undeniable talent is the main attraction, it is not the only thing that draws viewers, as some social media users have admitted that although they came for the sports, they stayed for the plethora of eye candy that has been available at the Olympics.
From lean rugby players to agile cyclists and toned sprinters, the South African athletes have not disappointed, and have given viewers a wide selection of eye candy to set their eyes upon.
Here is a list of South African athletes who have an irresistible mug:
1. Francois Prinsloo
Starting our list off strong is discus thrower Francois Prinsloo. The Worcester native had an impressive throw of 61.35 meters, which unfortunately was not enough to qualify him for the finals. What is more disappointing than him not qualifying is that he will not be on our screens anymore throughout the Olympics.

2. Akani Simbine
Not only is Akani the fastest South African man alive, but he is also one of South Africa’s better-looking athletes, with a smile that can make anyone weak and a body to compliment. He managed to make mzansi extremely proud after placing fourth overall in the men’s 100m sprint, etching his name in the Olympic history books as one of the best to grace the track.
3. Zakithi Nene
KZN-born Zakithi Nene is a 400m sprinter, he is also the embodiment of the phrase ‘tall, dark and handsome’. Zakithi proved that he has beauty and talent by redeeming himself and coming out on top in the repechage round. Unfortunately, he placed sixth in the semi-final and was unable to qualify for the final. Nevertheless, South Africa is immensely proud of its efforts.

4. Zain Davids
We are all familiar with the phrase ‘save the best for last’ and that is what we did with Zain Davids. Although he did not get the amount of screen time we would have hoped for, the Blitzbok loose-forward has a face that could catch anyone’s attention. However, Zain and his fellow teammates are one of only three sporting codes to get on the podium after finishing third in the rugby 7s.
