‘Not the end of storytelling’ – Scandal writer opens up about show’s cancellation

by Sergio Miller

As one of South Africa’s most loved TV soapies, Scandal! concludes, one of its head writers has shared her thoughts on the show’s ending.

Last week, the production team celebrated reaching 5000 episodes since its first debut on e.tv in 2005. To honour the journey travelled, both cast and crew attended a private celebration held in Hyde Park with the theme being “Champions in Storytelling.”

In a recent conversation with TshisaLive, Helga Palmer, head of local programming at e.tv, shared that reaching the 5000th episode is a testament to their loyal followers and the talented crew who have shaped the show to what it has become.

“This milestone celebrates not just longevity, but the spirit of authentic South African storytelling that connects deeply with audiences across generations,” she shares.

Meanwhile, one of the show’s headwriters, Grace Mahlaba, has since appealed to fans to continue supporting the show, promising that the show will end with a bang.

In a recent video post, the creative writer shared that while the 20-year journey of the soapie comes to an end, her journey as a storyteller will continue to exist.

“I know that you’re sad. You heard the news that ‘Scandal!’ is coming to an end. It’s the end of ‘Scandal!’, not the end of storytelling. I’m still here as long as I’m alive,” says Grace.

“As long as I’m still meeting you, we have conversations, I am still gonna write beautiful stories that are inspired by you. Beautiful stories that you always on Facebook and on social media complaining, do this, do that. We hear you. We see you, and we are learning from you,” she shared.
