Mama Joy loves making headlines, but lately, they’ve been far from flattering.
Known for her vibrant energy and die-hard sports support, Joy Chauke – better known as Mama Joy – has been under fire, especially over recent photo ops.
On Sunday, South Africa mourned the passing of former SARB governor Tito Mboweni after a short illness.
Tributes flooded in nationwide, with even corporate brands paying their respects. In recent years, Tito became a social media hit, often delighting followers with his cooking – his go-to ingredient being canned fish.
Lucky Star, the brand behind his signature dishes, quickly honoured him online.

Mama Joy jumped on the bandwagon, cooking a stew with canned fish in his memory.

She even credited Tito for her love of the dish.

But her tribute wasn’t well received. Many slammed her for seeming opportunistic. One user, @Yandisa87376189, commented: “A chance to make money out of the situation. Some people have no shame.”

Others, like @NeoMerafi, were more blunt: “Sit down wena… you have no shame, sies.”

Users like @NeoThlabi questioned her sincerity: “Not sure you being sincere or want to trent(sic).”

Another user, @lphanyeko, added: “Wena you are looking for sponsor or being ambassador… You are trying to knock on @LuckyStarSA’s doors.”

Mama Joy’s reputation took another blow after allegedly slapping a little boy’s poster during the Bafana Bafana vs. Congo match on October 11.

Despite the backlash, Mama Joy remains in the spotlight – whether adored or criticised, she’s always at the centre of attention.
