Nhlanhla Mafu Shines Solo: ‘Inqaba Yami’ Tops SA Charts

by Zaghrah Anthony

Nhlanhla Mafu Finds Her Voice as a Solo Artist

After nearly three decades as the powerhouse vocalist of award-winning group Mafikizolo, Nhlanhla Mafu is stepping into the spotlight on her own terms. Her new single, Inqaba Yami, a deep house track infused with gospel elements, has soared to the top of South African music television charts, signaling her arrival as a solo force.

While Mafu has experimented with solo singles before, including Mahlalela and Thanda Ngalendlela, these earlier releases never captured the same attention as her work with Mafikizolo. With Inqaba Yami, however, fans are witnessing her carve out a distinct identity — one that balances her rich musical heritage with a contemporary edge.

Embracing a Solo Journey Without Leaving Mafikizolo Behind

Breaking away from a beloved group isn’t easy, especially when your voice is synonymous with its success. “Breaking away from a group is never easy, especially when your identity is so closely tied to it,” Mafu shared. “But this is a journey I’m ready for.”

Despite this bold solo step, she assures fans that Mafikizolo isn’t disappearing. Alongside co-founder Theo Kgosinkwe, she continues to honor the group’s legacy, performing at events and fulfilling bookings. Mafikizolo, originally formed in 1996 with the late Tebogo Madingoane, has consistently been a staple of South African music, and Mafu remains central to that legacy.

Expanding Horizons and Collaborating with the Next Generation

Since announcing her solo pursuits, Mafu has been actively making media appearances and performing on platforms such as Metro FM and UbuntuFM. She is also exploring new collaborations, including a recent teaser with rising artist Speedy on her X account.

Beyond music, Mafu is committed to mentorship and family, supporting her son, musician Ciza, as he builds his own career. Speaking to Chanel Africa, she reflected on her approach: “It’s always been about working with young people. When you bring the old and the new together, you stay current. That’s my philosophy in music, fashion, and everything I do.”
