Netizens stand with Nhanhla Mkhwanazi amid allegations of torture and more

by Nomonde Simelane

It appears that General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi can do no wrong in the eyes of some citizens, as they have taken to the internet streets to declare their unwavering support. This comes as the KZN Commissioner and some of his men face serious allegations of misconduct.

Despite quickly becoming the unofficial face of crime fighting and anti-corruption among the public, General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, along with several other South African Police Service (SAPS) members have found themselves facing a myriad of serious allegations including illegal extradition, perjury, arson, torture and more.

According to Sunday World, this is in connection to an Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) investigation, where Advocate Ricardo Arcangeli alleges that law enforcement officials, including General Mkhwanazi failed to follow the proper procedure when arresting and detaining his clients Esmael Maulide Ramos Nangy, Setefane Pereira da Costa Brites, and Samkeliso Mlotshwa.

The publication revealed that the allegations were detailed in a police report, as well as an affidavit from one of the three alleged victims. They have also triggered parallel investigations into the matter as authorities, including IPID, attempt to get to the bottom of these serious allegations.

Despite the severity of the allegations, General  Mkhwanazi has garnered some overwhelming support from the public. Netizens have come out in numbers to rally behind one of the few law enforcement officers they trust. These users have identified the allegations as an attempt at a smear campaign directed towards the General.
