In the midst of Nepal’s youth rioting against their government officials for various reasons such as corruption, South Africans have warned their politicians of a similar fate as they identify similarities between the two countries’ current state.
As of late, various social media platforms have been riddled with videos of Nepal’s population taking to the streets to amplify some long-standing grievances with their government. Multiple triggers have been identified as the cause of the protests, with the recent ban of over two dozen popular social media platforms, as well as the blatant corruption and flaunting of extreme wealth by the children of wealthy politicians, being at the top of the list.

On the other side of the world, in a place situated at the most southern part of the African continent, lies a country with an eerily similar situation, where the frustration of citizens with their government’s leadership has been growing louder and louder. For some South Africans, the Nepal riots are nothing but a glimpse of what is to come for the country and for our leaders.
According to some, it is only a matter of time before the anger and frustration translate to the same violence and chaos taking place in Nepal. They cite the government’s failure to put South Africans first, which they believe is evident in the dilapidated governance that has become the new norm in the rainbow nation.
Some have even gone as far as to send warnings to our leaders, stating that if no change is effected, South Africa will soon become the next Nepal and the leaders would have no one to blame but themselves.
I’m not gonna lie, South Africa in its present state is fertile ground for an uncontrolled revolution that mirrors that of Nepal. We are a time ticking bomb.
