With South Africa celebrating National Heritage Day soon, it might be a wise idea to use the holiday to go out and explore all there is to see that makes our beautiful country great.
Mzansi is home to some of the most diverse animal and plant species, and immersing yourself in the natural environment might not be a bad idea at all. During this month, locals usually have the privilege of enjoying an outdoor experience at South African National Parks (SAN Parks) all over the country.
This comes after SAN Parks announced that they have kickstarted their 19th annual SAN Parks Week which allows locals to visit several parks across the country for free. This initiative will run from 9 to 15th September.
Below are a few suggestions of some top national parks that you and your family can go and visit so you and your family can make memories.
Kruger National Park
Home to South Africa’s big five, the Kruger National Park is a popular spot among both tourists and locals. Here visitors get to experience all there is to see how these animals live their lives in the comfort of their habitat.
“Kruger Park has 500 species of birds and 6 of these belong to what is affectionately known as the Big 6. These include the lappet-faced vultures, martial eagles, saddle-billed storks and Kori bustards, Pels fishing owl, and ground hornbills,” reveals Kruger Safari.

Golden Gate Highlands National Park
If you are into history and the ancient secrets of this beautiful country, the Golden Gates Highlands is the place to visit. SAN Parks highlights that the first inhabitants of this area were the San.
In your visit to the park, you will have a firsthand glance at some of the rock paintings that were done during those times.
“Golden Gate is currently the only proclaimed National Park that protects the grassland biome which is the most neglected biome from the point of view of conservation.”
