Veteran actress, Nandi Nyembe has revealed that minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie has not fulfilled a promise he made to her on a viral video call.

Gayton made a video call from Cape Town, to Nandi after her health and financial struggles were shared on the social media platforms. In the call, the minister said he will send her a R20 000 from his personal account that will hold her until he arrives personally.

“Send the lady your banking details, not everyone else’s. This is from me, my own pocket. I am sending you something to tide you over for the next two weeks. I’m coming to see you, Mama Nandi, to make sure you’re okay,” he said on the call.

However, Nandi recently opened up to news publication, Sunday World where she revealed that Gayton did not visit her, and she last spoke with him on the video call.

“Nobody has called or said anything to me, so I am in the dark. I have already lost faith in politicians because the ANC said the same thing not so long ago, promising to assist me. There are so many people that come here and say the same thing. There was something happening in Durban which is ANC-related, but I refused when they wanted me to buy my own flight ticket to go attend when I am so broke,” she said.

The former Yizo Yizo actress told the publication that she thinks people are claiming to lend a hand, so they can get attention. She said she was recently called to a popular eat out spot in Soweto, where there was a fundraising event on her behalf. However, she shared that the organisers have not gotten back to her regarding the funds that were raised.
