The empowering podcast The Motherhood Network premiered on Mother’s Day, hosted by Nandi Madida and featuring her first guest, businesswoman and former Miss South Africa, Basetsana Kumalo.

The two inspiring women held a heartfelt discussion on motherhood, resilience, and the power of intentional parenting.

In the debut episode, Basetsana reflected on her journey from beauty pageants during apartheid to becoming a national icon, crediting her late mother for her unwavering support and guidance.

“My mother entered me into Miss Soweto in 1990 when I was just 16,” she said. “At the time, Black women couldn’t enter Miss South Africa, so I competed in Miss Black South Africa – and won.”

Four years later, as South Africa entered democracy, Basetsana’s mother once again stepped in and entered her for Miss South Africa, which she won in 1994.

“She always put us first,” Basetsana said. “She sacrificed everything for us. That intentional parenting shaped who I am today.”

Nandi and Basetsana also explored the importance of nurturing emotional intelligence in children and the legacy that mothers pass on through love and sacrifice.

“There’s always someone who sees something in you,” Nandi said. “Your mother saw it and invested in it.”

The episode resonated with many viewers online.

“This was so beautiful! Mama Basetsana is a Titus 2 woman we can all learn from,” wrote @khethiwesibuyi816.

“YHUUU! This conversation will heal many homes,” added @noxolothabatha2174.

The Motherhood Network Podcast sets a strong foundation for meaningful conversations around parenting, purpose, and legacy, promising an inspiring journey for South African women.
