The University of Pretoria (UP) has appointed former cabinet minister Naledi Pandor as an honorary professor in the faculty of education.

The university described the appointment as strategic, highlighting her contributions to research, student, and staff development without remuneration, Times Live reported.

Naledi, who earned a PhD in education from UP in 2019, served as a cabinet minister in various portfolios from 2004 to July 2024, including higher education and international relations.

UP Vice-Chancellor Prof Francis Petersen praised her commitment to education and leadership.

“Professor Pandor is a leader whose impact on education, policy, and innovation, and whose unwavering commitment to advancing higher education and sustainable development, aligns perfectly with the mission of the centre,” the report quoted Francis as saying.

“It is truly a privilege to have someone of her calibre join our academic network in this esteemed role.”

Naledi expressed gratitude for the honour, saying that her academic experience helped prepare her for her ministerial roles. She decided to return to academia after retiring from government in 2024.

Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane congratulated the former minister, acknowledging her mentorship and lasting impact on the sector.
