As mzansi bids farewell, the reasons behind the cancellation of Mzansi Magic’s drama series Gqeberha: The Empire have been revealed

Just days after DSTV announced that the drama series was not returning to our screens after the second screen, the real reason behind this decision has finally been revealed.

According to entertainment publication, ZiMoja, the show ended due to low channel ratings. Some internet users should not have made it to the second season as their storyline was not adding up anymore.

A close source told the entertainment publication that besides its low ratings it was due to an alleged mismanagement of funds.

“We were all shocked to learn that some people have been misusing money for their benefit instead of production,” adding, “With the show not doing so well and the money embezzled, they didn’t see a need to continue, especially because no one wanted to account for missing funds.”

In July, news and entertainment publication, IOL, reported that the drama series was filmed in the Eastern Cape and produced by award-winning production company, Tshedza Pictures, was indeed not returning.

The above-mentioned source states that the channel was made aware of the conditions the cast was in and the money that was not used properly.

Responding to those claims they said, “Mzansi Magic has just been made aware of the allegations of mistreatment of the cast, we take such allegations seriously and we will be reaching out to the production house to verify the same.”

Multichoice CEO for General Entertainment, Nomsa Piliso said, “It’s disappointing that when a show ends there is always negative speculation.”
