‘In die Dorpie’: Mzansi’s Justin Bieber Doppelgänger Goes Viral

by Zaghrah Anthony

Meet Mzansi’s Justin Bieber

South Africa has officially found its own Justin Bieber—or at least someone who makes the country do a double-take. James Sweetnam, a singer from Greytown, is trending on TikTok for an uncanny resemblance to the Canadian pop star. From his hairstyle to his swag, Sweetnam has viewers pausing videos to do a second look.

Initially, James downplayed the comparison, saying, “I don’t see it.” But now, he’s leaning into the viral fame, performing covers and playful local twists on Bieber hits, including the parody “In die dorpie,” a South African spin on Yukon’s “In the City.”

From Greytown to the Spotlight

Unlike Justin Bieber, who rose to fame as a teen sensation, James discovered his musical passion while at the University of Cape Town. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, he honed his craft—writing, recording, and performing his own songs from the comfort of home.

Sweetnam’s music blends genres like rock, funk, and R&B, giving him a distinct sound that’s separate from his viral lookalike status. He now performs at gigs across South Africa, gradually building a fanbase drawn not only to his appearance but also to his musical talent.

TikTok Fame and Public Reaction

The reaction on social media has been electric. Viewers can’t get over the resemblance, with many sharing comments like: “Jy lyk soos Bieber, maar in die dorpie vibe!” Others are celebrating his musical talent, praising the creativity of his local song adaptations.

TikTok clips of James lip-syncing and performing have garnered thousands of views, turning the Greytown native into a household name virtually overnight.

More Than Just a Doppelgänger

While the viral buzz started with his Bieber-like looks, Sweetnam is proving he’s more than just a lookalike. His original music, localised covers, and genre-blending performances are winning over fans who want substance alongside style.

For South Africans watching the rise of their own “Justin Bieber,” James Sweetnam represents a mix of fun, talent, and local pride. From Greytown streets to TikTok stardom, this singer is putting Mzansi on the map in a uniquely musical way.
