After intense speculation and anticipation, SABC2’s iconic soapie “Muvhango” has officially announced its return for its 27th season, premiering on 5 August.

Daily Sun states that the announcement was made during a launch event on the 25 July at Chartwell in Joburg, effectively slamming rumours that the long-running show was facing cancellation. Duma Ka Ndlovu, the executive producer, revealed that the upcoming season would undergo significant changes to cater to a younger, more fashionable audience.

The last episode of the soap opera aired on 2 July, with the public broadcaster replaying old episodes while negotiations for contracts with the show’s production company owned by Duma, were underway.

A source close to the soapie told ZiMoja that the SABC was unhappy with the Muvhango storyline and that Duma was no longer paying attention to the soapie due to his long-term contracts with Mzansi Magic.

However, the decision to bring the soap opera back was driven by fan complaints and the realisation that the slot was still attracting viewership and advertising revenue. “Even the old seasons that were replayed after the last episode was aired were still bringing numbers,” the source told the publication.

In addition to revamping its look with a new logo and title, “Muvhango” will reintroduce familiar faces such as Lebo Tisane, Wiseman Zitha will be returning and the legendary Leleti Khumalo who is joining the show will bring fresh energy to revive its storyline.
