Mpumelelo Mseleku’s polygamous journey hits rough waters

by Samantha Mochele

In the dramatic season finale of Izingane Zes’thembu which recently aired, Mpumelelelo Mseleku, the son of the well-known polygamist Musa Mseleku, faced significant challenges in his quest for a successful polygamous relationship.

Throughout the season, viewers witnessed the complexities and struggles associated with Mpumelelelo’s polygamous lifestyle. The finale showed a series of dramatic events, including a heated altercation between his two partners Vuyokazi Nciweni and Tirelo Kale.

The episode featured a confrontation between Vuyokazi and Tirelo, where Tirelo said that Vuyokazi’s departure was linked to Mpumelelelo’s preference for a virgin as his first wife, which escalated into a physical fight. This conflict came from Vuyokazi’s decision to leave the polygamous arrangement leaving Mpumelelelo with Tirelo.

In an interview with Daily Sun, Tirelo reflected on the intense emotions and drama captured during Season 2 of Izingane Zes’thembu, saying, “Season 2 was a rollercoaster of emotions. We filmed so much but reality TV will only show a bit of what was filmed. Some things aren’t there. I didn’t go there and pretend to be something I’m not when cameras are on […] The season finale didn’t show everything. Viewers didn’t see everything. The part they showed me crying, I didn’t just cry out of nowhere, it started somewhere. They know why I cried. I know my truth and how everything unfolded.”

Talking to the publication and reflecting on her experience with Izingane Zes’thembu, Vuyokazi described the show as “toxic” but a “real experience.” She expressed regret over not speaking up sooner, feeling that she was often instructed to respect Mpumelelelo which left her feeling disrespected and foolish.

She further clarified that her decision to leave wasn’t influenced by Mpumelelelo’s preference for a virgin as his first wife, despite her being his first girlfriend.

“I healed while I was in the relationship. I had been made an idiot. The whole virgin thing showed me he didn’t need me even after I gave him two kids. Even if he would’ve changed his mind, made me the first wife or even married me, I’d still not be happy in that marriage. I’d rather move on with my life,” Vuyokazi told the publication.

Vuyokazi will shift her focus on her children, who now live with her. Tirelo also confirmed that despite the on-screen drama, she and Mpumelelelo are still together and working on their relationship.
