South Africa’s political landscape continues to remain shaky as uMkhonto Wesizwe (MKP) and other parties and citizens have amplified the call to charge Afriforum with treason following the controversial USA-RSA relations.
The beginning of 2025 saw President Cyril Ramaphosa sign the Expropriation Bill, which aims to align expropriation law with the constitution into law. This Bill has been the source of immense internal and external conflict, as some citizens and politicians, including Afrikaner lobbyist group Afriforum, have openly rejected and opposed this Bill, citing that it is a violation of human rights.
In efforts to draw more attention to the matter, Afriforum leaders and members took matters into their own hands by appealing to the international political players, including to US President Donald Trump, who shares the same sentiments as Afriforum and has publicly called South Africa out.
Due to such actions, MKP filed charges of treason against Afriforum earlier this February, citing their peddling of false information against the government. According to SABC, the Hawks have confirmed four dockets of high treason have been opened regarding the spreading of disinformation regarding the Expropriation Act in the United States.
However, the police branch refused to divulge who the cases were opened against but revealed that it was “some individual that may have crossed the border to go and communicate some of the things that are perceived to be in the direction of high treason”, according to Hawks leader General Godfrey Lebeya.

Calls for action against Afriforum have increased immensely as South African citizens highlight the danger of their actions. These users believe that Afriforum has constantly disregarded the law as well South Africa’s best interests to prioritise their own, with little to no consequences. They call on the government to put an end to it, as it has become unbearable.
It’s long overdue for Afriforum to be charged. They have been a law unto themselves.
