Miss Universe Nigeria title holder Chidimma Adetshina has her sights clearly set on becoming the catalyst for change on the African continent.

The 22-year-old model has been the subject of lots of criticism in the last month. This follows the controversy surrounding her Nigerian and Mozambican heritage during her run to become the next Miss South Africa.

Following her crowning as Miss Universe Nigeria this past weekend, she took to Instagram to highlight the things she plans to achieve during her reign.

“As I accept this honour. I want to share a vision that burns deeply within me. A vision of African unity and peaceful co-existence!”

“Let’s break down the barriers that divide us. Let’s foster a continent where every African can move freely without prejudice, pursue their dreams and contribute to the growth and prosperity of our great continent.”

She highlighted that her crowing is not a symbol of beauty, but a symbol of action.

Last month her non–South African heritage resulted in a social media uproar causing the Department of Home Affairs to intervene where it was revealed that prima facie evidence existed which suggests that her mother was involved in identity theft and fraud.

This ultimately resulted in Chidimma withdrawing from the competition, only to be granted a lifeline by her father’s birth nation of Nigeria.

With her now being granted the highest honour in Nigeria, she later thanked the public for their continued support.

“I am excited for the journey ahead and for the opportunity to serve as Miss Universe Nigeria.”
