Media houses shamed for hosting Dr Matthew Lani

by Bongiwe Mati

Fake doctor Matthew Bongani Lani recently caused a stir when he visited South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) owned radio station, Metro FM to confirm once again that he is indeed a doctor.

Matthew was arrested last month after he was spotted at Johannesburg’s Helen Joseph hospital allegedly pretending to be a doctor.

He was later released after the NPA shared that there was not enough evidence to link him to the offences.

The popular radio station received a lot of backlashes from internet users for the interview after it was confirmed by the Department of Health, WITS University and the Health Professions Council of South Africa that he had no medical qualification.

Before visiting the Metro FM studios, Matthew had entered controversial content creator Musa Khawula’s X-Spaces, where he did not back down from his medical doctor claim, later disappearing due to internet connection issues.

He also visited Promise Makunyane’s Own Narrative podcast where he claimed he was still traumatized by the arrest and that he was on leave going back to work in March 2024.

Shared by content and news hub NowInSA is a recording of the Metro FM interview:

Even though Metro FM presenter Faith Mangope’s intentions was to also highlight the crisis of fake doctors in the country some social media users did not find joy in the interview citing there was a lot of attention given to the fake doctor.

They shared:

If his own lawyer said publicly that Matthew Lani is not a doctor, how does metrofm see the need to interview him about being a Dr and where he worked and got his degree? What is the reason behind the interview #metrofmsa
