The Secretary-General of the African National Congress, Fikile Mbalula, is having a great time exploring the Nile River, but at whose expense?

The controversial political figure recently took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share that he was in Juba, the largest city and capital of South Sudan, enjoying the scenes of the Nile River.

Although the iconic river is mainly associated with Egypt, it also flows through or along the borders of nine other African countries, including South Sudan, Sudan, Burundi, Tanzania, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia.

Sharing a video of himself on a boat and taking in the beauty of the longest river in Africa accompanied by a little dance move, the former Minister of Transport captioned his post, “Arrived safely in Juba. Now exploring the river Nile.”

Many social media users were not too pleased with the video posted by the cabinet minister.

One X user commented, “Hawks must investigate. I hope he didn’t use state funds for this vacation.”

Another user complained, “Back home we are suffocating under the ANC government. Electricity just went up. Fuel is going up. Interest rates went up two weeks ago. Food is going up. Taxi fares are going up. No water. Our so-called ‘leaders of society’ have no idea what we’re going through.”

Another X user wrote, “Who paid for the flights?! Us taxpayers again!”

Fikile, possibly doing damage control after seeing the complaints in his comment section, shared more posts related to the country he was visiting. This time, sharing with X users his business instead of pleasure.

The Minister noted that he was invited to the “Inauguration of the First Session of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, a historical milestone for the people of South Sudan.”
