MaWhoo sparks online debate after speaking on alleged NSFAS rejection

by Zintle Mdaka

South African singer Thandeka Nontobeko Ngema, popularly known as MaWhoo, has found herself at the centre of online discussion after speaking about her alleged experience with NSFAS rejection due to a low APS score.

The conversation started after comments attributed to the artist surfaced on social media, where she reportedly reflected on her academic journey and the challenges she faced in accessing funding for her studies. According to the discussion circulating online, MaWhoo suggested that she was once denied financial support from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) because her Admission Point Score (APS) did not meet the required threshold at the time.

The remarks quickly gained traction across platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Instagram and TikTok, where users weighed in with mixed reactions. Some social media users expressed sympathy, saying her experience reflects the struggles many South African students face when trying to access higher education funding. Others questioned the timing of the comments and debated whether the situation was being misunderstood or taken out of context.

The topic also reignited broader conversations about the NSFAS application system, with users highlighting the pressure placed on students to achieve high academic results in order to qualify for funding. Many pointed out that the APS requirement has long been a barrier for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, sparking ongoing debates about fairness and accessibility in the education system.

As the discussion continues to trend, the Bengicela singer has not issued any additional clarification beyond the initial comments circulating online, leaving room for speculation and interpretation among fans and critics alike.

Despite the online debate, supporters of the singer have urged social media users to avoid jumping to conclusions and to consider the broader challenges students face in South Africa’s education landscape.

The conversation remains active online, with many continuing to share their own personal experiences with NSFAS and the hurdles involved in securing financial aid for tertiary studies.
