Malcolm Marx meets young fan who beat cancer

In a touching encounter at Sky Stadium, Wellington, Springboks hooker Malcolm Marx shook hands with Nathan Jonker, the young South African Kiwi whose fight against cancer inspired thousands.

The moment at the Springboks’ captain’s run was celebrated as a symbol of courage, resilience, and the uplifting power of sport.

Nathan, diagnosed with cancer in 2023, had watched the 2023 World Cup final from his hospital bed, cheering alongside his father, Benton. During his recovery, Marx sent Nathan a personal video, encouraging him to keep fighting and promising that one day they would meet, a promise that came true on Saturday.

The story first came to wider attention when Benton shared Nathan’s journey with Keo & Zels, who featured it on their podcast and SA Rugby Magazine platforms.

Keo reached out to SA Rugby President Mark Alexander, who immediately arranged for Nathan to meet his heroes, despite logistical challenges.

Support from SA Rugby staff, including Andy Colquhoun and former Springboks PR head Anne-Lee Murray, ensured the video reached Marx and his team.

The organisation coordinated to give Nathan and his family tickets to the sold-out Castle Rugby Championship Test against the All Blacks and access to the captain’s practice, where Nathan finally met Marx.

For supporters and rugby fans alike, the handshake wasn’t just a greeting, it was a moment that celebrated bravery, hope, and the inspiration sport can provide, as a young boy’s determination and a champion player’s encouragement came together on the field.
