One of mzansi’s biggest singing groups, Malaika, has recently announced their long-awaited return to the music scene following a 10-year absence.

Known for having swept the country off its feet with several hit songs including Destiny and Uphel Amandla, Malaika is considered one of mzansi’s biggest singing groups that entered the music industry during the early 2000’s. As their popularity grew the group achieved great success and won multiple awards including Best Newcomer Group in 2004, followed by Best Southern Group in 2005 at the Kora Awards.

Speaking about the group’s return in an interview with news and entertainment publication Daily Sun, the co-founder of the group Bongani Nchang told the publication that the return of Malaika is what the people needed.

After being with the group since its earliest days, Bongani says that the achievements of the past and present and reflects his legacy.

“I made the promise to keep the brand alive. Yes, there was a hiccup and a pause for about 10 years. I felt like the time was right because I was mentally and emotionally ready,” he explained.

Even though they have been relatively silent about releasing songs in the past, he says that the group remained active in providing entertainment to their most loved supporters.

“From 2022, there were a whole lot of calls for Malaika to come back. People were calling us for weddings. When I saw Tsoakae was up for the cause, I thought she’d be perfect. And when people saw us and how consistent we are, they weren’t disappointed.”

Meanwhile, their big return appears not to be in vain as the group have also announced news about a soon to be released song, called Mona, as well as a live show performed at the Smooth Sunday Soul Sessions at Slotjhile Pub and Shisanyama in Thembisa, Ekurhuleni on Sunday, 24 November.

Bongani says that the song is one that fans can relate to and hopes that they will enjoy it.
