Major League DJz Clarify No-Show Controversy Amid Kenyan Festival Backlash

by Zaghrah Anthony

Major League DJz Speak Out on Kenyan Festival No-Show Claims

South African amapiano powerhouses Major League DJz have broken their silence on the recent controversy surrounding a Kenyan festival appearance. The duo addressed their Kenyan fans directly on Tuesday, November 25, seeking to clear up misconceptions and false narratives circulating online.

“We want to clear the air and speak directly to you… Our incredible Kenyan supporters,” the statement read. “The recent event circulating online had no involvement from us. We had no agreement, no site visit, and no communication with the promoters behind it. In fact, we’ve never even heard of them.”

Money and Miscommunication

The DJs explained that payments made in their name were blocked by Forex, leaving them unable to control or influence the situation. “Banks speak to banks,” they said, underscoring that the misunderstanding was largely administrative.

They also reassured fans that their decision to delay Kenyan shows is deliberate. “We’ve intentionally held off from performing in Kenya because we’re planning something truly specialised—bringing you the full Balcony Mix Africa experience, just like we do at home in South Africa… with proper production, sound, visuals, and energy,” the duo said.

“Please, moving forward, always use our official booking details and emails listed on our public platforms. Avoid middlemen or third-party promoters. We love you deeply, Kenya, and we’re coming. See you in 2026.”

Kenyan Promoters Push Back

The statement comes amid escalating tensions with Kenyan event organisers. Last week, The Afters KE African Music Festival announced that Major League DJz had been removed from the lineup, citing “unavoidable circumstances.”

Earlier, three Kenyan entertainment companies—The Afters KE, 6AM Entertainment, and The Human Discretion Company—issued a joint statement accusing the DJ duo and their management of repeated contractual failures. The companies claimed financial losses and audience disappointment from prior engagements dating back to 2021.

The list of no-shows includes:

  • PianoFest by 6AM Kenya – July 31, 2021, Ngong RaceCourse Waterfront

  • Double Revolution by The Human Discretion Company – December 24, 2022, The Winning Post

  • The Afters KE African Music Festival – Scheduled for December 12-13, 2025, Fort Jesus Museum

The statement noted that in each case, the DJz had received full or partial performance fees, along with arrangements for premium travel. Despite this, the artists allegedly failed to perform and did not provide restitution.

Pattern of Misconduct or Misunderstanding?

Kenyan promoters labelled these incidents as a recurring pattern of professional misconduct, impacting businesses and undermining public trust in the regional entertainment sector. “We wish to make it unequivocally clear… the failure of these shows rests entirely with Major League DJz and their management,” the joint statement said.

The companies emphasized that they are pursuing legal avenues to recover damages and ensure accountability while reaffirming their commitment to delivering high-quality entertainment experiences.

2026 and Beyond

Despite the tension, Major League DJz remain focused on creating memorable shows for their Kenyan fanbase. Their 2026 plan promises a full Balcony Mix Africa experience, complete with the energy, visuals, and sound the duo is known for.

Social media has been divided, with some fans siding with promoters and others trusting the DJs’ statement. Local Kenyan music bloggers have speculated that the controversy highlights the growing pains of coordinating international acts in East Africa, particularly for high-demand genres like amapiano.

Whether this saga will resolve amicably or head into legal battles remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Major League DJz’s Kenyan supporters are eagerly awaiting a show that matches the hype.
