MacG trends after receiving more funds from DSAC than other creatives

Following full disclosure of the list of beneficiaries who have received funds from the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture, the renowned internet personality and founder of the YouTube channel, Podcast & Chill, Mcgyver Mukwevho, more commonly known as MacG has been at the top of trending news in the country.

This comes after the 35-year-old creator was not only among the list of thousands of beneficiaries to profit from the relief fund but was also one of eight people who gained the most amount of money.

The list shows that many of its beneficiaries received between R10 000 – R20 000 from 2020-2021 during the pandemic, however, positioned at number 2664 on the list was MacG who bagged a whopping R75 000.

In an interview with the news and entertainment publication Citizen, the podcaster shared that he supported Minister Gayton McKenzie’s decision to reveal who the beneficiaries were.

“I fully support Minister McKenzie‘s decision to publish the list of beneficiaries,” he said.

Ironically, Mcgyver was later surprised to have heard that his name was on the list.

Ever since the release of the list, many have been taking a swipe at the podcast host after he previously distanced himself from receiving government funding in previous years.

In one interview with Julius Malema, MacG made it known that they don’t need government funding to make a success of themselves, to which the EFF leader later corrected him and said that they do.

Meanwhile, he later acknowledged to Citizen that he has benefited from government during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This funding was crucial as the pandemic impacted our operations and restricted our ability to record normally and generate income. Our long-time Chillers will recall that we have discussed this on multiple occasions.”

Others later accused him of using the money to pay for the dowry when he married Naledi Monamodi.


TimesLive reported that in total the department spent R72m on 3,962 beneficiaries.
