The Black Panther actress Lupita Nyong’o recently went through a breakup with Selema Masekela, son of the late South African music legend, Hugh Masekela. The actress took to social media to share her heartbreak, in the hopes of reaching others who are in similar scenarios.

The breakup between Lupita and Selema occurred less than a year after the couple went public with their relationship on social media in December 2022. On Thursday, the 40-year-old actress took to Instagram to share her heartbreak woes. She prefaced by writing:

“There are much more important things going on in the world right now, and my thoughts are with those who are deeply suffering. At this moment, it is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust…”

Continuing:

“I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception.”

In her post, Lupita didn’t specify what exactly came between herself and Selema, but her words imply that the cause for their break up is related to infidelity.

“I am tempted to run into the shadows and hide, only to return to the light when I have regained my strength enough for me to say, “Whatever, my life is better this way.” But I am reminded that the magnitude of the pain I am feeling is equal to the measure of my capacity for love.”

Not yet healed from the pain, Lupita decided to take her heartbreak public, sharing the importance of not trying to escape the pain but to rather sit with it, as there is wisdom that comes from closing a chapter.

“And so, I am choosing to face the pain, cultivating the courage to meet my life exactly as it is, and trusting that this too shall pass. The promise, they say, is that a tender heart is what gives birth to fearlessness. I hope it’s true… I share this to keep it ?, and hoping that the knowledge of my experience might be useful to someone else out there experiencing the grip of heartbreak who is poised to try and escape from the pain and miss out on the wisdom that comes from it.”

She ended with:

“Let’s face our pain so we don’t spread it.”

In August earlier this year, Lupita took to social media to pay tribute tribute to Masekela but has since deleted all posts related to her now ex.

Selema Masekela has not commented on the breakup.
