Award-winning TV and Film producer, Lungelwa Lulu Hela, celebrates two magical years of the multiple award-nominated and winning telenovela, 1802: Love Defies Time.
The gripping telenovela filled with fantasy and myth elements was first introduced to mzansi on 1Magic as a spellbinding time-travel telenovela, where a young doctor is about to start her career when destiny intervenes and transports her back in time. Here she discovers that her true purpose is far greater than she ever imagined.
This telenovela with a unique storyline, produced by Hela Media, had viewers glued to their screens, wondering who would be the future King of the Jola clan in 1802 between Longamo (played by Motheo Ratikane) and Melisizwe (played by Ntuthuzelo Prince Grootbom). The time-travelling of Khosi Cube (played by Sikelelwa Vuyeleni) had mzansi in awe and impressed with the telenovela, which is the first of its kind.
The telenovela with a riveting storyline boasted a star-studded cast, which includes Thembisa Mdoda, Zenande Mfenyana, Lunathi Mampofu and Vuyolwethu Ngcukana among others.
Celebrating the magic she produced, Lulu took to her Instagram page to reflect on the birth of this 1802: Love Defies Time.
“It was the 1st of May in 2023 when our first episode aired on 1 Magic TV. The show is currently enjoying its 3rd round of broadcast on Mzansi magic! I have loved carrying this story in my belly, but what I have loved the most was sharing it with our viewers! Thank you so much for watching it. I see your messages (even the angry ones demanding Season 2) and all the comments, I appreciate the engagement. I also get your “beef” about the ending bantase, but silapha ngoku wethu (we are here now),” she penned.
She mentioned how the creation of the telenovela had a good impact on her career, she remembered that it challenged, stretched and changed her in a good way. Lulu expressed her gratitude to the brilliant and hard-working cast and crew, and the writers who helped bring her vision to life.

The time travel telenovela received six nominations from the South African Film & Television Awards in various categories such as, Best Achievement in Wardrobe, Make Up and Hair styling, original Music, cinematography, supporting actress in a telenovela and Most Popular TV Soap or Telenovela. They also clinched a Golden Horn Award for Best Achievement in Make Up and Hairstyling- TV Soap/ Telenovela.
