Lorna Maseko’s SAA deal: Connection or merit? Mzansi has questions

Renowned international celebrity chef Lorna Maseko has scored one of the biggest gigs of her career with local airline South African Airways (SAA). She has been tasked with the difficult task of creating the infamous airline’s menu for this fiscal year, however, internet users have raised their eyebrows as to whether this was deserved or not.

Taking to her social media, the acclaimed chef shared the exciting news with her followers and supporters, revealing that her menu would cater to the business class passengers only and would be greatly inspired by her Tswana roots, as well as some Pan-African flavours that would resonate with the diverse customer base SAA has cultivated.

Proud to announce my partnership with @flysaa to create a menu for this fiscal year! 🇿🇦
Rooted in my culture as a Motswana & inspired by pan-African flavors, these dishes celebrate the beauty of our continent. 🌍

Despite Lorna’s very public rise to becoming one of mzansi’s most popular celebrity chefs, internet users were left wondering how and why this life-changing opportunity could be afforded to her over the plethora of chefs that mzansi has to offer. This comes after Lorna made waves on social media for her questionable dishes, leading users to believe that her close proximity to those in powerful positions might have put her in the perfect position to be awarded the tender. Her infamous cabbage steak as well as her chicken feet dish stands out for those who have followed her for a while, as they express concern over her ability to prepare meals.

Some of these users have credited political big-shot Floyd Shivambu, expressing that he has been behind her success and alleging a romantic relationship between the two. Other users have gone to the extent of suggesting alternative chefs with a more trustworthy track record such as the popular Funny Chef and the award-winning Fiks the cook, who SAA could have considered over Lorna.
