From Scandal! to the World: Litlhonolofatso Litlhakanyane’s Big International Win

From Tibi on set to global acclaim

When South African audiences first met young Litlhonolofatso Litlhakanyane on the hit soap ‘Scandal!’, portraying the cheeky but vulnerable Tebello “Tibi,” few could have predicted the international route he’d take. Now he has added a new milestone to his story: an international Best Actor award.

A Moroccan moment for Mzansi’s talent

Earlier this month at the 16th edition of the Festival International Issni N Ourgh du Film Amazigh (FINIFA) in Agadir, Morocco, Litlhakanyane was crowned Best Actor for his performance in the feature film Bird Boy, in which he plays a character named August. What makes this win even more notable is that he shared the award with actor Oumar Diaw from the French-Senegalese film Where There Is Love, There Is No Darkness.

A story beyond the trophy

What stands out is not just the prize, but the journey. South African film and television talent often finds appreciation domestically; international recognition like this lifts the spotlight further. Litlhakanyane’s win sends a signal: our actors are not just excelling at home—they’re standing shoulder to shoulder with global players.

Reaction at home: pride and memes

On social media, the response was warm. Fans of “Tibi” flooded to X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, congratulating the former child actor. One post read, “Little Tibi doing big things, yeah.” Another said, “The boy is more than deserving.” There were laughs, too, at how someone from Joburg is suddenly being honoured in Morocco, and praises on how youth from townships and suburbs manage to lift off into the international scene.

What this win means for Mzansi film

South Africa’s creative industry has often spoken of the “next big wave” in local content and film production. This moment offers proof. When a young actor from a national soap steps into a globally recognised film and wins, it encourages more investment, more co-productions, and more doors for local talent. It subtly reshapes how we see our own industry.

Background you should know

Litlhakanyane’s role in Bird Boy is his second international outing—he previously appeared in The Rhino Case as Thabo. He is represented by the agency MLA Moonrise, which has a strong reputation for launching South African actors into international territories. The FINIFA award is a respected honour in North-African and Amazigh-language cinema circles, making his win all the more significant for crossing cultural-region boundaries.

A young actor’s local roots, global wings

For South Africa, this is a moment of collective pride. It reminds us of how far we’ve come—from stories told for our own screens to recognition at international festivals. For Litlhakanyane himself, it’s a turning point: the “child actor” to “international award winner” narrative is now his. And for the industry at large, it presents a fresh chapter: one where our actors don’t just work locally—they compete globally.
