Listeners threaten to follow Sol Phenduka out the door

by Nomonde Simelane

Listeners across the county have pledged their allegiance to Sol Phenduka, and revealed they will no longer be tuning in to Kaya 959 after they suspended and fired him for his involvement in the controversial Minnie Dlamini saga.

Earlier this year, a Podcast and Chill episode quickly went viral when hosts Mac G and Sol spoke on media personality Minnie Dlamini and her inability to keep a man. Things quickly went sour when Mac G suggested that the culprit might be the presenter’s poor body odour, and previously alleged that unlike Zodwa Wabantu who is loud and proud, she was an undercover sex worker and laundered money as well.

This episode made its way onto various social media platforms and garnered immense backlash, as internet users called the duo out and condemned them for the sentiments they shared regarding Minnie. In response, Minnie went the legal route, and sought a total of R2.5 million from the duo.

Recently, reports of Kaya 959 suspending Sol for his involvement in the matter, citing ongoing internal process, had been circulating. Shortly after, the station confirmed that they had opted to immediately terminate the controversial figure’s contract.

“Kaya 959 cannot and will not condone comments made on the MacG Vodcast, where Sol Phenduka is an integral part of the presenting team… Misogynistic remarks made about actress Minnie Dlamini were unacceptable and inconsistent with respect owed to women,” reads a statement by Kaya’s Acting Managing Executive Dave Tiltmann.

Despite the problematic nature of Sol’s actions, the decision by the content provider has garnered some backlash, and has prompted listeners to rally behind Sol. These users label this decision as unfair, as they highlight and label Sol as an innocent bystander in the matter, and paint Mac G as the real and only perpetrator.

We definitely stand with our boy Sol Phenduka…. He did nothing wrong, kaya FM can go to hell….. They need to face MacG and leave sol alone.
